There is an interesting thread about excommunication going on over on Dave's Mormon Inquiry.

http://mormoninquiry.typepad.com/morm...

I found this thread interesting. Dave talks about Excommunication and LDS members have made some very interesting comments to his thread. One in particular struck me:

"I sat in on an excommunication "trial" once as a ward clerk. The person was an inactive endowed member (divorced, female) who was cohabiting with someone. (She was "discovered" by tracting missionaries.) We were surprised she showed up, and she basically said she didn't want to be exed and threatened to sue if she were. Ultimately, the bishop decided he would be justified to ex her, but that doing so would probably make it so she wouldn't ever return to the church. I think he ultimately decided against any kind of formal disciplinary steps, since he felt that the only justification for them would be to help the person involved, and she at the time wasn't in a position where anything would help her."

Most likely we haven't heard the side of this person. Maybe Bob McCue could chime in on this one, but it's interesting to see the psychological mind-set of the TBM. They think that they are holding courts to help the individual. In this case, this person obviously felt the court was a sham and stated that she'd sue them if they excommunicated her.

Three men held my excommunication. Ward Clerk, Bishop and 2nd Counsel. Turned out later that the 2nd Counsel was defrauding Workman Compensation by instructing an employee to lie about an accident - tell them the accident was off-site. The employee - a new convert to the church - ended up with thousands of dollars in medical bills, fighting both his employer and insurance. He ended up inactive with a lot of debt while the 2nd Counselor continued in his position. Eventually he lost his job. When his Bishop was notified, he stated that his Counsel was a lifetime friend and would never do anything as such.

Even so, they sat in judgment over me in a "Court Of Love".
Anger Last Night - I Finished Reading The Book By Martha Beck, "Leaving The Saints"

I finished reading the book by martha beck, "leaving the saints?". My wife aked about it and I said it might be an interesting read from a woman's perspective. She went ballistic. "I don't need to read about sexual abuse" she says.

Anyhow that lead into the whole "religion" thing. Anger was the main theme. I feel unsupported and like I'm evil since the truth came out. She is anger that her life is turning out differently. I told her that it's not my fault my brain figured the inconsistencies out. Why should I be the bad guy?

It's like finding out at age 25 that you were adopted but your birth parents never told you and you found out from a letter in the mail that you were indeed adopted. Wouldn't you be angry with your parents for not telling you the whole story? I told her that and she calmed down.

She believes there is good in the church and we should continue. I told her my days of going are causing strife and stress and maybe I should just chill out for a while. I can't believe religion is so engrained.

Now I know what it's like when I baptized people on the mission and they were from strong Catholic homes that opposed the conversion.

Mormons Continue To Teach That All Other Churches Are Apostate

In an article on the Banner Of Heaven, Mormons continue to show their true natures:
The chart at mormoninfo.org has three columns. One with various doctrinal questions. A second titled “Mormons Believe.” With what Mormons believe about the questions. And the third column titled “Christians Believe.” I don’t have any problem with what the second column says we believe. It seems pretty accurate. But still the chart has a big problem. Which is that the titles of the columns are grossly wrong. The second column about Mormon beliefs, should be labeled “True Followers of Christ Believe.” And the third column should be labeled “Apostate Christians Believe.” Because the beliefs in the third column certainly were not taught by Jesus. But came later under the Great and Abominable Church. After the priesthood and revelation were lost from the earth. After intellectuals perverted the truth. Trying to accomadate the Greek philosophies of men. And thus we see the danger of ever trying to accomadate gospel truths to the fashions and fads of so called intellectuals. Which are always changing, for example no one believes the Greeks anymore. So that now the so called traditional Christianity based on Greek philosophy, is completely ridiculous.
Fine example of how the current teachings of the LDS Corporation are starting to sink into the congregation. Intelectuals are bad. Critical thinking is bad. Intelectuals such as Grant Palmer and Simon Southerton are bad. Don't be an intelectual. Obey, Obey, Obey.

New site to go and look at:
This site is for ex-Mormons seeking to understand their experiences.

We will explore how Mormon culture and doctrine controls the thoughts, behaviors, and emotions of members without their knowledge, and how this effects the ability of members to have flexible beliefs, leave the organization, and ultimately recover from the emotional and spiritual abuse they may have experienced.

In a word, Mormonism is a cult. Ex-cultists of all types find they continue to have difficulties long after leaving. Ex-Mormons are no different. This site is intended as a resource to help in the recovery process.

From SlashDOT:
"The Federal Election Commission today issued an advisory opinion that finds the Fired Up network of blogs qualifies for the 'press exemption' to federal campaign finance laws. The press exemption, as defined by Congress, is meant to assure 'the unfettered right of the newspapers, TV networks, and other media to cover and comment on political campaigns.' The full ruling is available at the FEC site. A noteworthy passage: '...an entity otherwise eligible for the press exception would not lose its eligibility merely because of a lack of objectivity...'"

Really! My wife and I picked up the movie version of "The Phantom of the Opera" and when Christine started hitting those magnificent notes, I felt a chill go up my spine. I "felt the spirit"... The amazing, magnificent, and marvelous human spirit!

And when I felt that, it hit me: Emotions that accompany religious experiences, while often conjured by situational factors (emotionally charged testimony meetings), are nothing more than regular emotions. You can feel "similar" (though I think more inspiring) emotions by watching an amazing human achievement, particularly performance art (for me at least).

What's more interesting to me is that I feel greater awe and appreciation for human accomplishments now that I am not religious than when I was religious. I've had very similar "religious" experiences while attending ballets or operaettes (e.g., Les Miserable) or even amazing Cirque du Soleil performances. What each of these things has in common is that they illustrate just what humanity can accomplish with dedication and determination.

Of course, performance art is not the only thing that gives me this feeling. I've had similar washes of appreciation when watching footage of the space shuttle or learning a new scientific principle. I experienced something similar on Saturday night when we watched Kinsey - another awe-inspiring movie that illustrates what passionate people can do in the pursuit of truth.

Religious experiences are, unfortunately, a corruption of this feeling: They convolute it toward the end of manipulation and deceit. They take some of the most powerful feelings humans are capable of experience and use them to indoctrinate and fleece people. What a shame!
